Developing good taste

Today’s Personal Branding Insight

Hey, it's Ephraim from TLGhost. There's something that all great creatives have in common. And that’s great taste. Today I wanted to explore this philosophy.

🔍 Today’s Highlight:

I've been thinking a lot about taste.

You know, that gut feeling when something just clicks.

  • Rick Rubin talks about it.

  • Steve Jobs lived by it.

  • Ira Glass calls it "the gap."

They all emphasize the importance of developing good taste.

They know what they like.

They know how to execute on it.

They know that others will resonate with it.

But here's the challenge:

Most creators come into this game with the unfound philosophy that they already know what they want.

I’d watch this video. I’d read this thread. But in reality, they still need to develop good taste on what works and what doesn’t.

How do you develop that taste in the first place?

They way I did it was through brute force immersion.

It's about immersing yourself in environments that give quick and abundant feedback.

Think of it like acquiring a taste for fine wine.

It doesn't happen overnight.

You sip, you savor, you learn.

Slowly but surely, you're training your palate.

Same goes for your creative taste.

Without this deliberate practice, you might assume something will hit just because you like it.

But that's a risky gamble.

So, how do you start?

Surround yourself with diverse influences.

Seek out feedback—lots of it.

Don't shy away from criticism.

Embrace the learning curve.

Until next time,

Ephraim
